Logline: Hater is an apocalyptic thriller about a rage virus that transforms ordinary people into violent killers.
Back in 2015, the film was set to be produced by Mark Johnson and Guillermo del Toro and directed by J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible, Society of the Snow). Del Toro described the story as “a head-spinning thrill ride, a cautionary tale about the most salient emotion of the twenty-first century.” Bayona said, “Hater is about a sudden epidemic of hate that comes from nowhere and happens to everybody. It doesn’t care about race, sex, or heritage.” Hater does not feature traditional “undead” zombies. They actually look “normal.” Also of note, Mazzara wrote the adaptation for Hater before joining The Walking Dead as its showrunner.

Logline: Set in the early 1900’s, this prequel to The Shining follows Bob T. Watson as he travels with his family to the Rocky Mountains to build the grandest hotel the world has ever seen, only to be greeted with one harrowing tragedy after another. This script for The Overlook Hotel was written by Glen Mazzara based on “Before the Play” by Stephen King, and was previously set to be directed by Mark Romanek.
MEET THE WRITER
Glen Mazzara
Glen Mazzara is a television writer/creator/showrunner who is currently working on a new show for Netflix: MERCENARY: AN EXTRACTION SERIES. Mazzara was recently showrunner for MGM+’s BEACON 23, starring Lena Headey and Stephan James. Simultaneously, he was also a Consulting Producer for THE ROOKIE, starring Nathan Fillion. He is currently developing a project based on major IP for Sony. His most recent creation was A&E’s series, DAMIEN, based on the classic horror film, “The Omen.” Before that, Mazzara was Executive Producer and Showrunner for AMC's record-breaking series, THE WALKING DEAD, which earned him two Saturn awards and was listed as one of AFI’s Top Ten TV Programs of 2012. He was awarded the 2013 Bram Stoker award for Superior Achievement in a Screenplay. He also earned a Peabody for his work on the Golden Globe-winning THE SHIELD. He ran season two of TNT's medical drama HAWTHORNE and worked on NBC's LIFE. He created the series CRASH, the first scripted drama on STARZ and developed Stephen King’s DARK TOWER novels as a series for Amazon.
In 2023, Mazzara was selected as one of The Hollywood Reporter’s Forces for Change for his work on inclusion and diversity issues in the entertainment industry. He co-chaired of the WGA’s Inclusion & Equity Group for eleven years and is a co-founder of the WGA Staff Writer Bootcamp. Mazzara is a frequent speaker at the WGA, the Writers GuildFoundation, the WGA Showrunner Training Program, and the WGA Writers Access Project. He has served on the WGAW Board of Directors and is currently on the Board of Trustees for Humanitas. He is a member of ReFrame, which works to improve opportunities for women in the entertainment industry. He has taught classes and seminars at colleges across the country and is a frequent speaker at professional conferences both in the U.S. and overseas. He is a proud member of NYU’s Mentoring Network and received their inaugural Mentor of the Year Award. He has served as an advisor for the Sundance Institute’s Episodic Story Lab.
Mazzara lives in LA with his family.
